Forest shrine of Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken next to Harajuku Station. Grounds follow sunrise and sunset (December closes 16:00). Inner Garden ¥500. Goshuin from 09:00 at 長殿. Hatsumode is Japan’s busiest. Not a mall.

Metropolitan park of 54 ha next to Meiji Jingu. Always open, free. Picnic lawns, cycling course, dog run (web registration, 12 Tokyo parks). Weekend festivals on Event Plaza and Keyaki Namiki. Service centre 03-3469-6081.

Neighbourhood shrine one block off Takeshita. Enshrines Admiral Togo. Grounds 06:00–17:00 (winter open 06:30). Reitaisai 28 May, Mitama lanterns in July. The Harajuku shuttle bus is stopped.

Ukiyo-e museum behind Laforet. No standing collection on the walls; shows rotate. 10:30–17:30, last entry 17:00. Monday closed plus changeover days. Cash only. Hello Dial 050-5541-8600.
