Lai Mai, known in Japanese as Rai-Mai, is a Thai restaurant housed in a converted vintage Japanese house just off Omotesando's main drag, a short walk from Omotesando Station. The setting is immediately distinctive: a traditional kominka exterior decorated with Thai ornaments, giving the feel of a Southeast Asian street stall transplanted into a Tokyo backstreet. Thai staff run the kitchen and counter, turning out classic, comforting dishes in an unpretentious, market-style format that has made it a neighbourhood favourite. The menu features green, red and yellow curries, massaman curry, gapao rice with minced chicken and basil, khao man gai, and stir-fries with adjustable heat, with daily-changing lunch plates that offer generous value. The restaurant also operates a Yatai Deli takeaway service across several Tokyo office buildings, bringing its curries and rice bowls to busy workers, and the Jingumae location offers both eat-in and takeaway. Lunch is currently the primary service, with the dining room bright and welcoming for solo diners and small groups alike. For an authentic, unfussy Thai meal in one of Omotesando's most characterful settings, Lai Mai is a genuine gem. It is a little piece of Bangkok street culture, served warm and generous in the heart of Tokyo.
