Art Kissa Beniya - "Art Cafe Beniya" - is the basement cafe of the Watari-UM Museum of Contemporary Art in Jingumae 3-7-6, the striking striped building designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta on Gaien Nishi-dori. Run by the long-established Aoyama wagashi house Beniya (founded in 1923), the cafe is described in the museum's own recruitment notice as "an art cafe centred on wagashi and tea," with matcha and sencha prepared properly and seasonal sweets that tie in to the exhibitions overhead. It is one of Tokyo's few places where a contemporary art show and a traditional Japanese sweet genuinely share the same address. The menu is built around wagashi and carefully brewed tea, with limited-time sweets created to mark specific exhibitions - for example, a commemorative fresh sweet was produced for the Os Gemeos and Barry McGee show. The cafe sits in the museum basement alongside the On Sundays museum shop, so visitors can combine art viewing, a tea stop and some design-led shopping in one visit. Dine-in is the model, and the setting suits art lovers, quiet readers and travellers who want a calm, culturally grounded pause between Harajuku and Aoyama. If you are visiting the Watari-UM or simply walking the Gaien Nishi-dori art corridor, descending to the basement for a bowl of matcha and a seasonal wagashi is one of the most rewarding small rituals in the neighbourhood. It pairs the discipline of a century-old wagashi maker with the curiosity of a contemporary art museum.
