Meiji Jingu's Omisaka (New Year's Eve) features the Oharae (Great Purification) at 14:00, the Joya-sai rite at 16:00, and the first drum of the new year at midnight. The shrine stays open overnight into January 1.
Peak crowds hit between 22:00 and 03:00 as millions arrive for hatsumode. The Saitan-sai (New Year's first rite) takes place at 7:00 AM on January 1. A distinct experience from the three-day hatsumode period that follows.
