Fukuyoshi is a small, unassuming eatery perched on the third floor of a building in the Jingumae area, the sort of place you might walk past a dozen times before realising it is there. Once you climb the stairs, you are greeted with straightforward Japanese comfort food prepared without fuss or fanfare, which is precisely its appeal. The menu sticks to reliable staples rather than chasing culinary trends, making it a solid choice when you want a proper meal rather than another Harajuku snack. Portions are generous and the pricing is refreshingly honest for a neighbourhood that can sometimes lean towards the inflated.
Finding it requires a little attention, as the entrance is modest and the third-floor location means there is no street-level kerb appeal to catch the eye. Look for the building number on the 4-chome block near the quieter end of the Harajuku strip. It is worth the climb.

Best tonkatsu place in Tokyo. They repeatedly ask you not to take photos or use phones in the restaurant. There are many signs inside mentioning this as well in English and Japanese. So all the people who posted videos and pictures here are jerks.

Real delicious food and wonderful atmosphre. The couple running the place can't be more friendly and helpful. Kind of disappointed to see all the user photos in here since they have a strict "no photos" rule with plenty of signs, and the owners seemed quite uncomfortable with them. So disrespectful.

It was a bit of a challenge to find this Tonkatsu restaurant since the building looked like a residential area and you have to go up a staircase to get to the 3rd floor whete the little restaurant is! It was a bit intimidating to push on …
