China Festival 2026 occupies Yoyogi Park's event plaza, outdoor stage, and zelkova avenue on Saturday 5 September and Sunday 6 September. Gates run 10:00 to 20:00 both days. Entry is free. Rain goes ahead. Severe weather cancels. The opening ceremony is slated for 11:00 on Saturday.
This is the same lawn that sits between Harajuku Station and Yoyogi, so Takeshita-dori traffic and the park gates will collide by early afternoon. The festival started in 2017 as a civilian Japan-China culture event. Organisers say 2025 drew 164 exhibitors and about 200,000 visitors. The 2026 theme is "bonds of Japan-China cultural exchange, knowing China's now." About 100 booths are planned across food, retail, companies, and workshops.
The park layout that actually matters
Tokyo Metropolitan Park Association lists the festival on the event plaza, the outdoor stage, and the zelkova namiki. That is three different walking surfaces. The plaza holds the denser food rows. The stage holds music and dance. The namiki is the long, shaded overflow where people eat standing up. If you enter from Harajuku, you hit the namiki first. If you enter from Yoyogi Station, you reach the plaza with less Takeshita overspill.
The official site at chinafes.net/yoyogi is still dropping stall maps closer to the weekend. Stage timetables were "coming soon" in late August. Do not build a minute-by-minute plan off a blog. Screenshot the official map the night before, then treat it as a suggestion. Last year's volunteer PDFs on the same domain are a better hint of how wide the site runs than any third-party roundup.
Food first, then the stage, then crafts
The organisers' own September post names hotpot, malatang, and skewers as the food headline. Independent previews add mapo tofu, xiaolongbao, and dumplings, plus a malatang-focused block. That is not a full published stall list. It is the flavour of the rows. Bring cash and a transit IC. Weekend festivals in this park still stall on weak mobile payments when the 4G dips under the trees.
The stage mix is traditional instruments, song, dance, and C-POP. Cultural tents cover Chinese tea, hanfu try-on, calligraphy, and crafts. A panda photo set is promised again. Tourism desks from Chinese cities usually sit at the quieter edge of the plaza. Those desks are the only place you will get bilingual flyers without hunting.
2025 numbers (164 firms, 200,000 people) are the organiser's claim, repeated on the 2026 site. They are useful as a density warning, not as a 2026 headcount. Two days, 10 hours each, free, in the park that already hosts Super Yosakoi and Namaste India, means the lawn is tired by Sunday evening. Go Saturday morning if you want space around a malatang stall. Go Sunday late afternoon if you want the stage without the first-day crush.
Harajuku access, toilets, and the 20:00 close
JR Yamanote Harajuku is the obvious stop, then the park's east gates. Chiyoda Line Meiji-jingumae dumps you closer to Takeshita and the namiki. JR Yoyogi is calmer and puts you on the west side. The festival does not replace park rules. Bicycles still get in the way on the namiki. Dogs are a park issue, not a festival perk.
Toilets inside the park queue hard after 14:00. Use the station facilities before you enter. There is no cloak. Suitcases from Takeshita shopping will make you miserable in the food lanes. The 20:00 close is a hard park curfew more than a concert encore. Start walking toward the station at 19:30 if you need a train seat.
